On June 10th, 2021, Unity in Action Magazine announced the first-ever Art Science & Democracy Festival in the Champaign-Urbana community. Operating beyond the extent of your typical magazine, Unity in Action works to address social and economic issues affected by marginalized families and communities of color through journalism and outreach. In conjunction with the Boneyard Arts Festival, the agency’s Art Science & Democracy Festival will be held Juneteenth weekend of 2021 (June 18th, 19th, and 20th) by means of a series of community-led workshops at various locations throughout Champaign-Urbana.
The YWCA's contribution to ASD is seven original poems written and performed virtually for the YWCA at U of Illinois’ annual Stand Against Racism campaign on the theme, “Racism as a Public Health Crisis”, Featuring Ashanti Files and Ruby Mendenhall.
This summer’s event maintains the goal of teaching our valued community members how to express their voice through art, to make a beneficial impact in the world. While intended to energize the current and future generations of this community to make lasting and effective change, all residents of Champaign-Urbana are welcome to attend any of the workshops that will be provided.
On Friday, June 18th at 7:00 pm the festival will begin with a kick-off reception at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (202 S. Broadway Ave, Urbana, IL 61801). All are welcome to network, eat, and celebrate at this joyous occasion! Beginning Saturday, June 19th at 12:00 pm, Unity in Action will be joining forces with the HVNT Juneteenth celebration in Westside Park (400 W. University Ave, Champaign, IL 61820). Come out to this fun-packed day for education, art creation, and socialization! Aside from in-person events, the Art Science & Democracy Festival will also be hosting a variety of virtual events throughout the weekend as well, ranging from interactive dance and art tutorials to displays of social and racial justice. Further details on each event and workshop can be found at the festival’s homepage, here: https://www.unityinactionmagazine.com/festival.
The Art Science & Democracy Festival would not be possible without its host of CU community-wide partners, including the Champaign Park District, Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, Urbana Park District, YWCA, 40 North, and many more. All of whom will play a significant role in the event on Juneteenth weekend. Be sure to bring your friends and family out for the first festival of many from Unity in Action Magazine.
